HOWTO: Get The ImageClass MF4370dn Working On A Mac

The Canon ImageClass 4370dn is a great multi-function printer, one of the few Canon all-in-ones that work on a Mac.

If you intend to connect the printer via USB, the installation is fairly straightforward.  This tutorial lists the steps for a Network install.

Step 1: Download the printer driver from Canon’s website

Step 2: Run the installer

Choose Easy Install

Canon makes is quite obvious that a Windows developer wrote the installer!

The install should take less than a minute

The installer forces you to restart

Step 3: Once you’ve restarted your Mac, go to your printer, make sure the ethernet cable from your router is plugged into the printer and the USB cable (if used) is unplugged

Step 4: Next, on the printer, press

..Menu

..[11] System Settings..OK

..[3] Network Settings..OK

..[4] IP address..OK

..[1] View IP address..OK

..[2] IPv4..OK

..[1] IP Address..OK

<If  an ip address  is displayed, the printer successfully got an IP assigned from your router>

Note down the IP address.

Step 5: Open System Preferences

Step 6: Select Print & Fax

Step 7: Add a printer

Step 8: The printer should automatically appear. If it doesn’t, select More Printers and enter the IP address manually

You now ready to print! If you are having any problems get this to run on a Mac, post a comment here, I usually watch this space and will be glad to help!

    Hi,

I tried using the steps and managed to complete step 8 (auto appear). However, I cannot print with the below error:

    Specified sub-ticket is illegal.: -9584

    Can you please advise?

    Thanks,

    chris

  2. admin says:

Remove the usb cable if it is attached, power off and on the printer.

I suggest calling the helpline. I followed their instructions via phone and change the setting to manual ip address and it worked.

I have the same problem and have just about had it with this printer. The Canon ImageClass MF has been nothing but trouble from day one. I know you think it is a “great multi-function printer” but I would never recommend these to Mac users. Buy a HP instead – they just work.

I too have gotten the ticket error. I talked to Canon to resolve the matter. In my case the problem seemed to be that the printer didn’t get proper IP/subnet mask/gateway settings from the router automatically. So from the printer, you have to turn off the automatic detection and then manually set the above three numbers. The latter two you can obtain by looking in the network settings on your computer, under Advanced -> TCP/IP. For the gateway use the router number. For the actual IP, use something high for the last number (e.g. 99), the first three should be the same as the router’s.

The problem I have though, is that duplex printing is not enabled. I’m told it’ll work via USB, but haven’t gotten a cable yet.

I have followed your instructions and still get the “specified sub ticket is illegal-9584″
I looked up the IP address for the printer, and manually wrote it in under More Printers. Still no printing action though. When I go to the printer cue it says stopped. No explaination.
    any ideas?

I was really hoping that Bonjur would just make the connection from my PowerBook4 to the Canon mf4370dn work. It doesn’t seem to have worked so I followed your advice above.
But after manually adding the IP address from the printer (I am assuming this is one that Bonjur assigned. I did not. ) I still get no printing action. The Cue says stopped.
    any ideas?

I just bought this a week ago and followed your instructions – i don’t care about the network – just would like it to work via USB cable and it still won’t print. I’ve downloaded all the correct drivers but it doesn’t work still with my snow leopard.

When i add it in printer and fax, it simply says that it cannot find the driver even though i’ve installed it twice and rebooted my computer.

    i’m running 10.6.2

i recently purchased this model and i am trying to get it to work – i don’t care about getting it network, just for it to print via USB at the moment.

I’ve downloaded the necessary driver for 10.6.2 but it still doesn’t work. When i add the printer in system preferences it cannot locate the driver even though i installed it twice!!!

    any suggestions?

Hey i figured out how to print via USB but now I am having issues printing wirelessly as well.

I’m trying to print wirelessly via an airport express. I plug the USB the airport and express and it is recognized (i configured it using airport utility). I added the necessary driver to install the printer that was recognized by the airport. However when I try to print, it says that I cannot print (but the printer is recognized!!!!)

i’ve tried resetting my printer settings, delete and installing the printer again, and updating all the drivers and software on my computer.

    Thank you for your help.

I’ve been having the same problem as Kruti Patel…
I’ve downloaded the necessary driver for my OS but system preferences says it can’t locate the driver. I’ve even bought a USB cable to connect it directly, as opposed to the network connection, but the main problem is getting my iMac to find the driver. Please help!!!

I’ve downloaded the necessary driver for my OS (10.5.8) but system preferences says it can’t locate the driver. I’ve been on the phone for hours with both canon and apple and I even took it took the genius bar today. Please help!!!

    • admin says:

      Goto sys preferences
      Print and fax
Clieck on add printer (+) button
      Click on IP tab
      Click on More Printers…
You should see the printer listed

    Hi admin,

i tried that and it didn’t work unfortunately. I even tried to manually add in my IP address from my network settings but it still didn’t work. I have my airport express piggybacking on my regular wireless network (just to extend the range of the router) – it’s not actually connected to my modem. When i plug the USB cord into the Airport in the USB port, it is recognized but it still won’t print :o (

    any other suggestions?

  15. Ralph says:

I believe you should use an ethernet port rather than the USB port for connecting to a wireless network via the Airport Extreme.
